Talking Problem with Postfix on Ubuntu

I recently installed Zimbra 4.5.0-RC2 on Ubuntu 6.06. Everything worked except Postfix (mta would not start). I suspect a problem with either my etc/services file (incorrectly allocated ports) or a clash between the ports Amavis and Postfix use. I am not sure which log files I could check, and would appreciate any help. Possibly someone else has had this problem.
In an effort to eliminate the problem, I just upgraded to 4.5.0-GA - without success.

Did it mention any port conflicts when you installed/upgraded? Have a look in /var/log/zimbra.log and/or /opt/zimbra/log/zimbra.log for clues. Try and telnet to port 25 on your server and see if there's another mail server running.

The installation did note a conflict on port 25 (zimbra-mta). The port is currently set for smtp service. Both Sendmail and Fetchmail were enabled but were stopped before Zimbra installation. I will check the logs for clues.

Phoenix

I have checked all logs in both /var/log and /opt/zimbra/log and have come up empty.
I still suspect a problem with service/port allocation in etc/services. This is currently set at:-
smtp 25.tcp mail
postfix 10024 zimbra-mta
postfix 10025 zimbra-mta

There could be a problem here!

I'm afraid I don't know anything about ubuntu and I don't really know why those statements are in your /etc/services file. I don't have those statements on my system but I am using CentOS, I don't really know what to suggest other than comment them out and see if it helps.

sorry, major typo there. It should read:-

smtp 25/tcp mail
postfix 10024/tcp zimbra-mta
postfix 10024/tcp zimbra-mta

Thanks for you help.

Solved the problem. I found that Exim4 had grabbed port 25 (used netstat). It is not listed as a service on Ubuntu which is why I missed it.

Zimra is working well.
