Well, had a ton of install logs. and figured I'd start clean. Deleted them all, did a uninstall, then re-install.

    com_zimbra_bulkprovision...done.
    com_zimbra_viewmail...done.
    Finished installing common zimlets.
    Restarting mailboxd...done.
Creating galsync account for default domain...failed.

    On the install.

Last few lines of the install log look fine. Nothing in the log with galsync.

For the install log, do you want the whole log? Or just the last few lines?

    Thanks.

? There's MX records - my mail is being hosted by google right now - dig mx shows those mail servers, and my output should show that?

Ok, I BELIEVE I've got everything resolved - I can now start Zimbra, I believe - zmcontrol start gives no errors:

    ]$ zmcontrol start
    Host vps.mydomain.com
    Starting ldap...Done.
    Starting zmconfigd...Done.
    Starting logger...Done.
    Starting mailbox...Done.
    Starting antispam...Done.
    Starting antivirus...Done.
    Starting opendkim...Done.
    Starting snmp...Done.
    Starting spell...Done.
    Starting mta...Done.
    Starting stats...Done.

However I don't see anything running on 7071, and I see no logs in /tmp indicating any startup errors?

That is definitely not the zimbra mysql. It sounds like you have the CentOS mysql installed and running, which will break everything. You should remove it. You also do not require XWindows to be installed (this is a server after all, not a desktop). You can remove that as well.

I'll remove the centos mysql and see what happens . I do have xwindows running until I get a tad more comfortable with ssh / CLI.

So - now the mysql.sock file is missing, and the mysql start won't create it

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/zimbra/db/mysql.sock' (2)

The zimbra.log on startup indicates permissions errors?

It sounds like you tried to start zimbra as root? from the wrong directory? No clue what you did here, but you definitely started up zimbra incorrectly.

I definitely started it as Zimbra, but possibly wrong directory.

Just started it from /opt/zimbra/bin . still no 7071 running. I see no errors

    what does
    Code:
    zmcontrol status
    show.

In any case, since you had the wrong mysql running, you probably need to reinstall. Who knows what happened to the data that was supposed to go into the zimbra mysql.
