Default LDAP errors, LDAP will not start

    Hello everyone,

This all started as a DNS issue and got progressively worse as I tried to fix it, but my immediate issue is ldap will not start. I get the following error:

    zimbra@mail:~/bin$ ./zmcontrol start
    Host localhost
Unable to determine enabled services from ldap.
Enabled services read from cache. Service list may be inaccurate.
    Starting ldap...Done.
    Failed.
ldap_url and ldap_master_url cannot be the same on an ldap replica

I realize the first line there with ldap trying to bind to locahost may be an issue. But how to I change that? I currently have users that have been using this server for about a month and cannot start over with a fresh install. I will paste some relevant info below from hosts file and other output..

    zimbra@mail:~/bin$ cat /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
    80.xx.xx.xx mail.xxx.com mail

    root@mail:/opt/zimbra/bin# nslookup 'mail.xxx.com'
    Server: 80.xx.xx.xx
    Address: 80.xx.xx.xx#53

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: mail.xxx.com
    Address: 80.xx.xx.xx

    root@mail:/opt/zimbra/bin# cat /etc/resolv.conf
    # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
    # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
    nameserver 80.xx.xx.xx
    nameserver 80.xx.xx.xx

Could you please provide exact zimbra version?
What you were trying to do when problem arise?

Other entries provided by you seems to be correct.

    Did you try zmcontrol restart?

You can close this posting I wasn't able to resolve it quick enough, so I had to just redo the installation from scratch to get the mail working again. The server is a new deployment so I am unable to continue working through this particular issue as it's working fine now on a completely fresh ubuntu install.

LDAP would not load at all on this server, even after backing up the /opt/zimbra folder, deleting it and running ./install.sh -u

When I ran ./install.sh , ldap still had errors upon installation.. what a strange issue! Nothing I tried could resolve it, and no DNS adjustment changed its behavior. It seemed to be something damaged with ldap somewhere in the OS...

I had to give up and start over.. fortunately they didn't have much mail stored as it was a new deployment only a couple weeks old. I'm definitely going to be taking periodic snapshots of the VM from now on, so I can just revert if it breaks again

    Thanks for your response!

Using snapshots is not a backup strategy, you should use one of the backup procedures covered in the forums and wiki - test them until you find one that works for you, make sure you know how to restore it, document it and take a backup regularly.

Thanks, I will do that as well. I just meant from a disaster standpoint. I plan to do a snapshot at least once a week for that purpose. I will make sure I educate myself on how to back it up properly and restore. Do you have a link to specific documentation that covers it well for the newest version? I've found a lot of old documentation on zimbra and want to make sure I am using the newest material.
