you made a backup before the upgrade right? you can restore /opt/zimbra/conf/localconfig.xml from your backup and retry the upgrade.

Sure did. Restored fine. I guess now I'm just looking for a better upgrade guide than "run install.sh".
Is there a recommended path to go from 3.1.4_GA_518 to 4.5.0_RC2_56?

The installer/upgrade process is designed to take you from pretty much any version to the current version you are installing by just running install.sh.

Officially the upgrade process is documented in the release notes. http://www.zimbra.com/pdf/Zimbra%20O...se%20Notes.pdf
