    Default Unable to get Zimbra working on my clean install - Ubuntu 12.04 x64

    I am unable to get zimbra working
    I followed this tutorial Install Zimbra Open Source on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS | WingFOSS

    When i go to https://mail.thesecond.org:7071/ I get This webpage is not available

    Here is my /etc/bind/named.conf.options
    Code:
    options {
            directory "/var/cache/bind";

            // If there is a firewall between you and nameservers you want
            // to talk to, you may need to fix the firewall to allow multiple
            // ports to talk. See http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/800113

            // If your ISP provided one or more IP addresses for stable
            // nameservers, you probably want to use them as forwarders.
            // Uncomment the following block, and insert the addresses replacing
            // the all-0's placeholder.

            forwarders {
                    8.8.8.8;
            };

            auth-nxdomain no;    # conform to RFC1035
            listen-on-v6 { any; };
    };

    zone "mail.thesecond.org" {
            type master;
            file "db.mail.thesecond.org";
    };
    here is my /var/cache/bind/db.mail.thesecond.org
    Code:
    ;
    ; Addresses and other host information.
    ;
    @       IN      SOA     mail.thesecond.org. mail.thesecond.org. (
                                   10118      ; Serial
                                   43200      ; Refresh
                                   3600       ; Retry
                                   3600000    ; Expire
                                   2592000 )  ; Minimum
    ; Define the nameservers and the mail servers
            IN      NS      192.34.62.191
    mail.thesecond.org.         IN      MX      10 mail.yourdomain.com.
    mail.thesecond.org.    IN      A       192.34.62.191
    here is my /etc/resolv.conf
    Code:
    nameserver 127.0.0.1

    Not sure what the problem is. By the way 192.34.62.191 is my public IP.

    on Godaddy DNS manager i have the following records

    Untitled.jpg

    when i run zmcontrol status from zimbra user in terminal i get

    Code:
    zimbra@mail:~$ zmcontrol status

    Are you behind a NAT router (or firewall)? If you are you should follow the instructions in the Split DNS wiki article to configure your (internal) DNS correctly. In any case your MX record is incorrect - read the Split DNS article and set the record format as per those instructions. You can also use the 'Verify...' section of that article to check your DNS recors and all the required settings.

    my mx records are wrong on godaddy or my server?

    Oh, I fixed the URL. Regardless of that, it shouldnt prevent me access to the admin panel.

    On your server but you could have found that answer by running the diagnostic test I've told you about.

    Really? You can't get access because the services aren't running according to the output you've posted.

    ok so i tried something different

    I made file /etc/bind/db.mail.thesecond.org and here is the content
    Code:
    ;
    ; Addresses and other host information.
    ;
    @       IN      SOA     mail.thesecond.org. mail.thesecond.org. (
                                   10118      ; Serial
                                   43200      ; Refresh
                                   3600       ; Retry
                                   3600000    ; Expire
                                   2592000 )  ; Minimum
    ; Define the nameservers and the mail servers
            IN      NS      192.34.62.191
    mail.thesecond.org.         IN      MX      10 mail.thesecond.org.
    mail.thesecond.org.    IN      A       192.34.62.191
    i rebooted the server just to make sure everything gets refreshed

    i then do dig mail.thesecond.org mx and get this
    Code:
    root@mail:/etc/bind# dig mail.thesecond.org mx

    ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> mail.thesecond.org mx
    ;; global options: +cmd
    ;; Got answer:
    ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 41399
    ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0

    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;mail.thesecond.org.            IN      MX

    It looks like its commented out by a ; but in the file its not. I am trying to make sure these files are right but i must be missing something.

    I also changed the named.conf.options file to this
    Code:
    zone "mail.thesecond.org" {
            type master;
            file "/etc/bind/db.mail.thesecond.org";
    };
    thought there may by a symlink issue so i directly referenced my config file. still no go.

    There is no domain on your DNS server named "mail.thesecond.org", it is "thesecond.org". The Split DNS article has full details of what these records should look like, yours should be this:
    Code:
    thesecond.org.         IN      MX      10 mail.thesecond.org.
    Not this:

    Code:
    mail.thesecond.org.         IN      MX      10 mail.thesecond.org.

    the reason i do that is because thesecond.org and mail.thesecond.org are two different servers.

    I can't for the life of me figure this out, I have rebuilt the server 3 times and can't get it working. Maybe is something to do with apache as to why I cannot view the admin panel and get an error Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED) ? I don't know. My server isnt beind a nat or firewall, so i am not sure if the bind instructions should pertain to this.
