Unhappy Zimbra fails to install on SuSE 10

I am very new to linux package installation, specially from command line. Mainly experienced on web development.
I first tried installing zimbra on a vmware SuSE 10 and it failed to install with following error:

Error: attempting to install i386 packages on a x86_64 OS.

I created a 32 bit server using i586 SuSE CD and after fixing couple of problems I get the message " unknown platform this may or maynot work continue anyway?" I choose yes and after couple of steps and checking for libraries and those required component mentioned in installation guide, it stops
after unpacking zimbra-core (sorry I don't have exact error now) I checked the /tmp/install.log and I have couple of lines ending with "done" and then
"zimbra core needed for ldap package failed dependencies" and it exits.
My SuSE installation is the minimum text mode installation and I stopped postfix and changed the sudoers mode to 0640, I also noticed there is no sendmail service as I tried to stop it (error: not such a service)
I have not set the MX record or hostname on this machine since it is temporary and I want to see if it works up to certain point. Does anyone know what is the problem?

Thanks a lot

I"m afraid there isn't much that we have to go on except the no dependency error.
I think you're going to need more libraries. Is it possible to install them from the install CD, or just do a reinstall with most of the libs installed.

Default attempting to install i386 packages on a x86_64 OS

I am also receiving this error on Fedora Core 4.

I am attempting to install the open source edition, but it doesn't seem to go beyond this message. Does this install need a 32-bit server vs a 64-bit?

I've got the same problem on SuSE 10.2:

Found zimbra-core
Error: attempting to install i386 packages on a x86_64 OS.

I'm assuming that none of the packages that zimbra installs are 64 bit compatable thus all fails.

Does anyone know how to install with packages such as apache, mysql etc already installed?

Not *officially*, but I'm sure that you can edit the script to make it work.

The problem is that that config isn't supported. Plus, you'll be opening up a can of very dangerous worms.

I think they're from Guatemala.

Correct, that's why we have different build for 32bit & 64bit systems plus openSuSE isn't a supported system and is difficult to get working (not impossible) - search the forums for some advice.

The 32bit build on a 64bit system won't work, get a 64bit build of Zimbra and a 64bit o/s and it will install quite easily.

It's been covered in the forums, do a search.

Angry

I have a 64 bit build of Fedora 7 running on AMD hardware.

I can't get either of the open source libraries to compile or using the pre-packaged binaries, obviously for the same reason.

I've searched. What are my options? We want to deploy Zimbra and having to buy old 32-bit hardware to deploy it on is simply not going to happen.

The only 64 bit builds that I saw were for RH Enterprise and those look like they are not the latest versions.

I'll keep looking but maybe someone can save me the pain if FC7 (or even FC5) on a 64bit AMD is simply never going to work.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums.

Your easiest option is to use CentOS5 64 bit then install the RHEL 64 bit version of Zimbra. there's a 'how to' install guide for CentOS in the forums if you search.

Thanks.

I should have replied much sooner. The RedHat distro installed on CentOS5_64 worked well (once I fixed some of our environment problems).

It's up and running. Good advice.
