You haven't followed the instructions in the Split DNS wiki article and you should never use a CNAME record for your mail server records. I'd suggest you read the article and follow theose instructions.

I was struggling with Split DNS too. you can read my thread here if you want

    I just can't seem to understand split-dns :(

basically what you want to do is is to use dnsmasq and not Bind9 if your looking for a simple way.

follow the steps in the wiki starting at "Configuring dnsmasq on the Zimbra Server"

    good luck!

    ok i'll try to help

you need godaddy DNS entries for the web to find your server and you need the correct MX records for email to be routed to your server

let's assume you have a website at www.smackthank.com and your zimbra server is mail.smackthank.com

to get to your website www.smackthank.com is resolved to 14.140.226.236 which is your public IP

to get to mail.smackthank.com you need an A Record at godaddy for Mail pointed to 14.140.226.236

then you need to add the MX record like this:

    Code:
    Pref	Hostname	IP Address	TTL
    0	mail.smackthank.com	14.140.226.236	60 min
again assuming 14.140.226.236 is your zimbra servers PUBLIC ip. it should be a static IP, you also need to enter the PTR record but i don't recall what it should be right now

that should allow a person on the web to enter mail.smackthank.com into browser and get your zimbra server login page

Split DNS doesn't have anything to do with all the above. Split DNS is for when your Zimbra server is behind a router with a PRIVATE ip address.. for example 192.168.1.100

if your zimbra server is sitting on a public IP then you don't need split dns

then you add entries into your firewall/router to allow the correct ports to send/receive mail

the wiki tells you how it works, the key is to understand split dns is different from the actual routing dns at godaddy.

    i'm sure i forgot something but it's 2am lol

This question has been answered all over the forums and is even in the Split DNS article, here's a quote of the first sentence of that article:

Installations of Zimbra behind a firewall (or NAT Router) often require the creation of some form of split DNS, also called split-horizon or dual-horizon DNS.
