Cannot Change Ownership to uid 503

Hello
I've downloaded to versions of zimbra collaboration open source. the latest being zcs-7.0.1_GA_3105.RHEL6_64.201103042110448, also the 7.1.4 from 20120105094634. to a fresh install of Centos and attempted under RHEL6.

As root I've attempted to untar the files with tar -xvzf but receive numerous "cannot change ownership to uid 503 permission denied" errors.
I've gone ahead and an ID zimbra with uid and group ID of 503 also a ID 1000 since I saw some complaints of this ID also.

I again attempted untar with --owner=root and --group=root...

Typically this is due to someone not creating the tarball correctly.

Any suggestions?

I have no trouble extracting or installing any of those downloads of ZCS on 'clean' operating systems with only a root users on the system. You can, however, try this:

When extracting with tar, the default for the root user is that tar attempts to retain the owner:group of the files originally stored in the tar.
When transferring tar files across systems, this may cause problem if the same user does not exist in the target machine.
Using the option --no-same-owner will force tar to extract the files and assign them root as owner.
The error does not appear when extracting with a normal user because in that case the default option is --no-same-owner.

Awesome - That did the trick. I'll have to squirrel away that switch for the future! ;-)

I'm getting another message I'm just not understanding when I run install. Again - a clean install of centos..
