Bounced messages resending OK

I've been having an issue with messages bouncing back when I send them. It puts a copy of the message into the Drafts folder. When I open the message to resend it, it usually goes right through. Sometimes it bounces back a couple of times, but invariably goes through.

What do I need to look at to troubleshoot this?

I mostly don't understand why it's telling me "Relay access denied" but then seconds later will allow me to send the message.

It just happened again. Here's the sequence of events:

I replied to Matt, it went through just fine.
Matt replied to me, it came in just fine.
I replied to Matt, it bounced with the above error message and moved into the Drafts folder.
I opened it from the drafts folder and hit send, it went through just fine.

Still no one who knows why an email will bounce back then send OK 10 seconds later?

It's very frustrating!
