Exclamation ZCS on Synology DS x86

    Hello,

I have a DS411+II with dual-core Intel Atom CPU and 2GB RAM on board.

I want to install Zimbra on it, but I don't know how, since there is no Synology OS in the download list.

I'm pretty sure it's some type of distro-Linux. Are there anyone here who could point me on the right path of how to install it?

You need to install Zimbra on one of the supported platforms, anything else is not supported.

In theory, you could install zimbra on DS411 from source packages, but it would kill the performance of the fileshares and the performance of zimbra itself would be so appalling that you REALLY shouldn't do that.

    Question WHY? Did you try?

Why is that? Have you tried it to install on yours Synology? Which model do you have?

I actually have 2GB(not 1GB) on board of DS411+II(it's somehow differs with CPU from DS410 and DS411+).

Performance shouldn't be affected unless it's something different I don't know. Why is Zimbra gonna be so terrible as you've said?

Your performance will be bad, because atom is weak cpu, and 2Gb isn't that much memory for zimbra, especially since there are other services running on synology aswell.
    Zimbra just loves memory:

You'll be better off by running it on a real computer instead.

I belive you. But it's not that bad. Intel Atom 525(Dual Core) - is the one of the most powerfull CPU through the whole Synology line.

As for the 2GB - hm.. I gess you are right, it's not much. But not that bad too, since originally Synology DS 411+II goes with 1GB.

Besides Web-server and Zimbra - I'm not going to run any other services on my Syno(excluding those standard).

Having set that.. Would you please, help me with any information as for the installing ZCS open source?

Overview on modifying the Synology Server, bootstrap, ipkg etc - SynologyWiki will help you set up development platform for Synology
After you have running compiler environment, you need Building the software yourself - Zimbra :: Wiki

Now, spend two weeks building, fixing things, rebuilding etc, and you might end up with system that barely runs.
If you actually feel brave enough to do this, write all your steps down so you can do it again when neccessary.
As this self built system isn't supported, you have to rinse and repeat the process every ~3 months or so when new version of zimbra is out.

Or, you could use real computer and one of the supported distributions, and have running system after 4 hours of tinkering(even faster with the vmware appliance).
It all depends on how much of your own time you are willing to spend.¨
I'd personally take the supported platform route.

To reiterate what's been said already, this is not a suitable platform for a Zimbra server - it's great for it's intended purpose but not as a mail server. Get a machine that is more suitable for running Zimbra and has a higher specification (plus room for expansion), install one of the recommended distributions (server platforms such as CentOS) and you'll find the whole experience a lot better. As I mentioned earlier, you must install Zimbra on a supported platform.
    Regards

    Thank you Bill!

I would lovely do that you've said. But I've just spent another thousand on equipment for my home needs including my second Synology DS 411+II .

I would agree to pay for the Zimbra Network Edition. But I don't want to have another platform. Don't want to have so much devices.

And why Synology DS is not good for mailserver. Because of luck of the power? I don't think so. I have DS 411+II runs a lot of stuff in my office including performing as a mail server.

You guys, might need to think about Synology platform. This days a lot of people around purchase Synology DiskStations
