Dang something so simple. I appreciate all the help. I made that change this morning and now /usr/bin is before /usr/local/bin.

[root@mail ~]# perl -v

This is perl, v5.8.5 built for i386-linux-thread-multi

So now I will wait for 4.5.6 to be released and try the upgrade again.

Just a follow-up..

This did solve the error I was seeing and I was able to upgrade to 4.5.6 without any problems..
