Angry Error on openSUSE 10.1

Hi there,

I am new to zimbra and linux in general, but I like the idea of Free (as in speech) more than anything else, so I am giving it my best. Although I think there are many issues with Linux, I believe one of the biggest is the fragmentation of distributions.

Ok, now I know it's not the right place to post my complains about linux in general so here's something very specific.

I should specify that I have uninstalled( ./install.sh -u) and reinstalled the zimbra a couple times and I end up here every time

On a openSUSE 10.1 I have the following problem:

I have noticed that there has been an issue with the hosts file so here's mine:

mail:/opt/zimbra/libexec # cat /etc/hosts

ff00::0 ipv6-mcastprefix

ff02::2 ipv6-allrouters
ff02::3 ipv6-allhosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
72.17.201.82 mail.thegabgroup.com mail

To end this: I am trying to convince my clients to install and use Linux, including Zimbra and the LAMP stack ... but if it doesn't work ... I can't make a case, so please help me ...

thank you much,

adrian

Well, the first thing to point out is that openSuSE 10.1 isn't a supported platform and you're likely to have problems. If you're trying to 'sell' this to your customers then I'd suggest an enterprise class operating system such as CentOS (it's RHEL 4 but free) or RHEL or ES.

There's some information in the wiki here about enabling the documents feature, there's also details on the forum of the fix for this problem.

Unhappy RHEL/Cent OS

I appreciate your help, a couple clarifications though:

1. The word 'sell' is loosely used. In order for me to have some confidence into this product and be able to go out and sell it to other people I need it to work properly. I have spent a week attempting to install this product and I have only problems. Suse, and openSuse are the distributions of choice in my company, and I don't understand why a company like Zimbra is not making all the attempts to provide potential customers with ready and easy to use installation packages. After all why does it matter what distribution is running underneath if the client is paying the licensing for the Network Edition.

2. Take a look at MySql's download page. They have 16 pages worth of builds for all kind of platforms... much easier to make a case for their product.

RHEL and Cent OS are not an option for us right now, the company is dedicated to Novell's products, buggy as they may be.

I will look through the wiki link you sent me, thank you for your help, but please take in consideration this point of view, it is likely to directly impact sales, and keep in mind that I am only trying to help.

thank you,

adrian.

On a openSUSE 10.1 I have the following problem:
As with most everything, it depends on what you want. For you, fragmentation is bad, for me multiple distributions means I have a choice.

Are you trying to install the NETWORK version on to openSUSE 10.1? If so, it will not work easily. I spent most of a weekend trying to make openSUSE 10.1 work and, as phoenix correctly pointed out to me, it will work but only after much effort and tweaking.

Easier choice if you are using the Nework version, would be to use openSUSE 10.0. Note that this is version 10.0 and not 10.1. I did that and the network version installed with a minimum of effort.

If you are using the opensoure (and NOT the Network version), I would suggest you use something like Ubuntu. Since you are new to Linux, Ubuntu should be a VERY easy Linux install and Ubuntu has very good support forums. I am using the opensource Zimbra version on Ubuntu and it installed very well.

Default Thank you

Thank you for your guidance....

To clarify : I agree with the benefit of choices. My issue is that it's difficult to be on top of all the different choices out there...

I am attempting to install OpenSource edition on the openSUSE 10.1

Is there an option to disable the documents feature for now? I haven't seen it in installation

I don't believe there's a way to not install it but if you don't want users to have access to it just disable it in the COS, those errors you're seeing shouldn't make any difference to the rest of the install.

I understood the use of the word 'sell', that's why I put it in single quotes. I's still recommend a enterprise operating system rather than openSuSE, perhaps SLES would be better for your clients but obviously it does carry a subscription fee.

Default Still no luck

Thank you for your reply.

I am unable to finish the installation of Zimbra, after these lines I get back at the prompt and if I start zmsetup.pl I get the same error, which puts me in a circle.

Initializing Documents...failed to initialize documents...see logfile for details.

Configuration complete - press return to exit

If there is a way to go beyond this step I could probably go ahead and disable the docs as you have advised.

It seems to me that it would be logical for Zimbra Inc, to want to build all kind of installs for all kind of distributions... anyone knows why they only have a limited amount of distributions they support ?

Anyway any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

adrian.

That really depends on what the error is that was logged. Have a look at the wiki here and there's also some info on the forums about enabling documents. If it's the same error as the one in your first post you'll find the answer in the forums.
