Default Zimbra NE in a Zimbra OSE environment

Hi everybody,

i would like to know if i can install a mailstore ( zimbra NE ) in an environment with Zimbra OSE installed.

I've installed mta, proxy e 2 mailstore of the Zimbra OSE edition, but now i would like to add some user with the NE funtionality and backup as well.

If i install it, how zimbra works?! The backup is for every thing or just for the mailstore (NE ) ?

thank for help

This has been answered many times in the forums. No, you can't mix and match versions.

i can tell you what we have done for your "kind" of setup.

we do have an external ldap, where all company user/group information is held. additionally this ldap (sun enterprise / iplanet / fedora ds,.. software) is acting as mail routing source and is running as ha multiple master.
we do have another server where a postfix instance is running as central mail routing instance.

we do have zimbra ne, zimbra and another 3rd party mailserver in production state. all mailservers are using the "mail-relay" as last resort/gateway. works like a charm for all mail traffic. addressbook sync works with gal sync (and specific ldap filters)

but you cant exchange calendar / briefcase/ .. data.

maybe this helps

Sorry Phonix for the post..

Thank you Andy for the reply and the advice.
Can't be possible to install a new instance of Zimbra NE and let be the mta of the OSE instance the one that relay the mail?

I mean install zimbra ne without mta or with mta set up to receive and send mail from the mta of the zimbra ose... it make sense?!

Thanks again for your help

No, I'll say it again, you can't mix and match the versions. You can install a second server that's an NE server but it would have to be a complete installation and separate from the OSS versions.

Phoenix,

i'm sorry for my misunderstanding, i'm a newbie and i'm trying to learn.
You said that i can't mix the version, but if i would like to set just 50 people with the NE in the same Domain.... how should i do?
Should i buy license for all 2000 accounts or may i do something like as Andy204 did? with out using a third part..

Thanks for you patience

I've got an idea...

if i keep using the OSS and create a new server with NE and the users that i want to let it use, using a different domain for example :
oss.domain.com
ne.domain.org

Then let receive the mail to the domain.com and send a copy to the domain.org.
While for sending the people in the domain.org must use domain.com.

Is this possible?

for carification: you cant mix the version means: you cant have an OSE and NE edition and both know of each other. they are standalone. they are their own islands.

you can run both (OSE/NE) under the same domain (you have to take care about the mailrouting) but they cannot work together in a shared collaboration platform (calendar / custom and shared addresses...)

i will do a sketch on our whiteboard and show you

here it is. every red circle means: standalone. no communication with other red circles. only exception: smtp, which is handled by the MR (mailrouter) part.
so if any instance (red circle) doesnt know an email address, the email is forwarded to the mr. this service then decides what to do:

email not known in domain
domain not known -> forward to outside smtp / spam gateway to deliver to destination smtp server

Andy,

that is what i want, let work NE and OSS in the same domain.
Can i create something like this?

one domain that can manage 2 istance one OSS and one NE
oss.domain.com
ne.domain.com

so the ne user are redirect to the NE server while the other to the OSS.

both of them connect to web.domain.com that i think should be the proxy.
I would keep my structure of the lan :
Proxy
Mta
Mailstore1
Mailstore2

and add a NE.
I'm not interested about the sync between the oss and ne users.
They should just use the same domain. Then the NE user have different privileges.
How can i upload an image as u did andy? So i show you what i mean.

Hope that i explain, my intentions
Thank you very much for the help
