I glad to report that I am now able to send & receive emails. The fix was not having the "file command" and cron package installed on the system. Those 2 packages are required in order for emails to be processed properly.

I'd recommend for Zimbra to perhaps check for those important dependencies during install. It is strange that my ubuntu install did not have those packages.

Thanks to all for there assistance!

-Joe

Glad to hear it's working, Joe!

I would you suggest you file a bug with the OpenVZ community, or at least with the contributors of the Ubuntu package, because they've got a broken package. I can assure you that this particular set of omissions doesn't happen using the Ubuntu Server installer from ubuntu.com. So somebody, in creating a preinstall package, messed up. . .and you suffered for it!

Hopefully your pain will be somebody else's gain. . .

Dan

Question

I need clarification for step 6c.

;
; Addresses and other host information.
;
@ IN SOA mail.MYDOMAIN.com. hostmaster.mail.MYDOMAIN.com. (
10118 ; Serial
43200 ; Refresh
3600 ; Retry
3600000 ; Expire
2592000 ) ; Minimum
; Define the nameservers and the mail servers
IN NS xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
IN A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
IN MX 10 mail.MYDOMAIN.com.

What IP is the IN NS looking for? Internal or External name server? And, what IP is IN A looking for? is this the mail server IP? Internal or External?

Thanks!

Hi seag33k,

The ip address here is your internal one. You are helping Zimbra to resolve itself. External stuff happens on your "out in the world" DNS, and nobody out there ever sees these records.

Good luck,

Dan

Thanks! So if the servers IP is 192.168.1.100

Then would the NS and A record be both the 192.168.1.100 address?

Thanks,
Eric

Yep, that's correct.

1) What version of Ubuntu? Zimbra is intended to work with the basic, no-frills 6.06 LTS server.

2) libdn may be different from libdn11. I would try apt-get install for all the packages that it says "missing" on.
Code:
apt-get install sudo libidn fetchmail gmp
Plus, if you haven't done so already (it won't warn you about this)
Code:
apt-get install perl
3) See this wiki for detailed installation instructions. You MUST have DNS working before you do this install.

Cheers,

Dan
