Default Dns

Hi all,

rookie question. I have an webmail email hosted by Webhosts Australia. I want to switch completely to Zimbra and then get Zimba connecting with my outlook at my office and my laptop. I have no idea how I do this. Webhosts have not helped at all.

I think I need the DNS settings but I dont really know.

Hey there! Do you own your own Server?
You need to be able to modify the DNS Settings of your desired Domain in order to Point it to your "Server".

If this is for the Zimbra Collaboration Suite (not Zimbra Desktop) then I'd suggest you start with the Documentation, you should start with the Quick Start Installation Guide and if you're behind a NAT router (or firewall) then read the Split DNS article.

See my last comment above about Split DNS, the forums are also a good resource have a search through them for details on DNS and Installation topics.

Default Dns

thanks for the above but none of this helps.

I just want to be able to use Zimbra, I have a friend who tells me how easy it was to set it up, but I am completely lost and wondering right now why I bothered.

I have an email hosted by someone else, I own the domain name, I understand that the DNS needs to be changed and 'pointed' to the Zimbra server but I just dont know how to get this done. Can anyone help

Well, at first:

To be able to use/install Zimbra you are in need of your own Server.

Do you own an entire Server?

Secondly:

It may be so that Zimbras Installationroutine is pretty straightforward, but if you are already unsure about what to do with you Domain for a start I think it wouldnt be such a great idea to run your own E-Mail Host.

This is a complex system that requires maintenance and your attention.

It not just "done" and sits there forever.

If you are really interested in running your email Host, I suggest reading up on and how E-Mail really works.

Well, as mentioned above by pge, you actually need to understand what email is and how it 'works'. You can't just install Zimbra if you don't know how to set-up the DNS, administer the mail server, administer your local Linux server itself - you need to do some reading about what the product is and what you need to do and you should start with the Documentation (details in the 'Docs' link at the top of this page). If you have questions after reading that then feel free to ask questions and we'll help, you should understand that it is a steep learning curve if you don't know what's required and if you've never done this before.
