[SOLVED] Some mail servers "refuse to talk to me" (deferred mail)

Hi Zimbra gurus,

I'm getting some messages about deferred e-mails from some servers.

... 450 4.7.1 Client host rejected: cannot find your hostname, [200.69.219.57])

I've read everything I could about this and I've reached the conclusion it was a reverse dns problem. So I asked my ISP to set it up. Today reverse dns is working ok Tools but some servers stills reject e-mail from mine.

Otro possibility I have read is a mismatch for the resolution of localhost.localdomain and my localhost ip address (127.0.0.1). When I do

Do you have any ideas of what can cause this behavior?

I would hazard a guess that it's cause by your records not having been update on all the DNS servers, try the test here (it doesn't return anything that I can see): Traceroute, Ping, Domain Name Server (DNS) Lookup, WHOIS

So hopefully it would be a matter of time and nothing else. The reverse dns was set up yesterday at 3:00 pm (UTC -3)

I believe it's usually around 24hrs for the records to propagate but it may be longer.

Update, 14 of the original 16 deferred mails were accepted and the website network-tools shows something new although it's not fully satisfactory.

Is it ok?

That tool still shows nothing when I look at it although if I try a 'host' for your IP address it returns the correct information from my location. The only way to know for certain what is the exact problem the mail servers are seeing is to ask the administrators of those servers. As I said initially, I was making a 'guess' at the cause of the problem and doing a few tests. Some of the tests work and some don't, try your IP at both of these sites to see what I mean:

DNSGoodies.com - DNS tools, WHOIS, Open Relay Test, Reverse DNS, Spam Database Check, traceroute, ping and other utilities.

Both of those sites show the reverse dns ok. All deferred mails were delivered.

Indeed it does plus the wonders of DNS. :D
