Looks like it can't figure out that ldap is supposed to be running.

zmlocalconfig | grep ldap

ldap_is_master = true
ldap_url, ldap_master_url = this host

zmhostname - should return hostname in ldap_url

Also - if zmhostname returns something that's MiXed Case, change it to all lower case:
zmlocalconfig -e zimbra_server_hostname=all.lower.case.host.name.co m

i found this in /opt/zimbra/log

[zimbra@mail log]$ grep -ri syntax *
zmloggerinit.log:ERROR: 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 1
zmmyinit.log:ERROR: 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 1

from your cmd's

ldap_is_master = true
ldap_master_url = ldap://mail.rndcomputing.com:389

[zimbra@mail log]$ zmhostname
mail.rndcomputing.com

still getting
[zimbra@mail log]$ zmcontrol startup
Host mail.rndcomputing.com
[zimbra@mail log]$ zmcontrol status
Cannot determine services - exiting
