I say install on Ubuntu LTS 8 0 4
Why ? Because the process is well documented, down to how to do the split DNS. Afterall, as mentioned, Ubuntu is a stable platform.

I too would have liked to install to CentOS but don't have the smarts to fight with Split DNS

CentOS is the easiest set-up for Zimbra (it's identical to RHEL), it's well tested and a stable platform.

The set-up of Split DNS on CentOS or RHEL is well documented in the wiki and covered many times in the forums. However, setting up a Split DNS is not a tutorial in how to install and set-up BIND it's assumed that the administrator can at least do that. If you don't like BIND then try installing a secure and fast DNS server like PowerDNS on your LAN and use PDNSadmin to administer it.

I know the wiki had the right stuff understandable by poor ole me for Ubuntu. I was able to follow that. I saw nothing there regarding CentOS that was as organized and together as the Ubuntu stuff.

Here's the good Ubuntu stuff.

The link to the Split DNS articles for RHEL/CentOS is spread all over the forums but, just for posterity, here it is again: Split DNS - Zimbra :: Wiki
