Default [SOLVED] Zimbra (zcs-5.0.18) on CentOS 5.3

I had tried to install zcs on CentOS 5.3 just by running the install.sh --platform-override without reading the install documentation. When that didn't work I printed out and read the doc.

My boot partition was already 100MB, the remaining partition allocated to /.
Iptables, sendmail, SELinux and MySQL all turned off and not running.
The /etc/hosts file was modified per the documentation and an MX record
    defined in DNS.

    cat /etc/hosts
    # Do not remove the following line, or various programs
    # that require network functionality will fail.
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
    192.168.1.6 jupiter.thisdomain.com
    ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6

    dig thisdomain.com mx

I reinstalled (upgraded it said) zcs-5.0.18_GA_3011.RHEL5.20090707164432.
The installation said it completed successfully. I rebooted the server and with the admin console saw most services running. The only services that didn't
start were antivirus and antispam. I'm not worried about those right now as
it shouldn't have anything to do with sending / receiving e-mail.

Looking at /var/log/zimbra.log there are hundreds of messages queued but all fail with Connection refused.

I was trying to deploy Zimbra for a shared calendar to replace Exchange but I can't get past the e-mail problems. I had created users and tried to send share invitations but the e-mails never get to the local users. If I send an invitation to my public e-mail address I had received the invites prior to the reinstall but not after the reinstall. Sending e-mail from the outside is received by postfix but that is suspended as it can't connect to 127.0.0.1.

Your hosts file is incorrect, this line:

    Code:
    192.168.1.6 jupiter.thisdomain.com
should look like this n(as per the documentation):

    Code:
    192.168.1.6 jupiter.thisdomain.com jupiter
Your MX record is also incorrect, it should be like this:

    Code:
    thisdomain.com. 38400 IN MX 10 jupiter.thisdomain.com.
If there's nothing you need on that server then I'd suggest you remove Zimbra completely with './install.sh -u' - that will remove everything including the /opt directory and any mail you've got. After making the above changes you should reinstall Zimbra and set your domain name correctly when asked by the installer and that should work without problems.
    Regards

    Bill

Bill, I uninstalled, updated and restarted DNS. Here's the zone file and results of dig:

    [root@jupiter named]# cat thisdomain.com.hosts

It appears to me that jupiter is defined as the mail exchanger but when I try to reinstall ZCS it stops with a DNS Error:

DNS ERROR resolving MX for jupiter.thisdomain.com
It is suggested that the domain name have an MX record configured in DNS
    Re-Enter domain name? [Yes]

Sorry for my ignorance, what am I doing wrong?

Nothing, that's the correct response for the installer. At this point you need to answer 'yes' and change the domain name to "thisdomain.com", once you've done that the install will complete and Zimbra should work fine when it starts. It will also create the correct default domain on your server.

    Default Up and running

    Bill,
Even with the changes I was still getting an error but it turned out to be the settings I had for DNS on the Linux box. I had not been running DNS on the CentOS server opting to use Cablevision's. I created the zone file and started DNS on Linux but had forgotten to change the server to refer to itself to resolve names. Once I found my error the install went flawlessly and ZCS is up and running. I am able to send / receive e-mail and the shared calendar notices go through. Thanks for your help!.
