memory related issue on FC5

I have two FC5 machines destined to run zimbra. One of them is working absolutely fine with 3.1.1, running all components.

The second one has, store, snmp, mta and spell.

The kernels are identical:
2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp #1 SMP Tue Mar 14 16:05:46 EST 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

The ram is identical (8GB). The processors are identical (Dual 2.8GHz Xeon)

However, the machine with fewer components on it fails to start the mail store because ...

ulimits are unlimited (idenitcal on both machines)

has been tried with and without swap enabled.

[root@zs2 log]# cat /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 8293120 kB
MemFree: 7975384 kB

The only difference between the two machines is that the working one has a hardware RAID controller, and the other one is Software raid based.

We've run full hardware diags on the non-working machine, and all is reported fine.

I am at something of a loss as to why this machine can't allocate the RAM. Does anyone have any pointers?

It's failing to alloc since 32bit Linux under normal Kernel can't have more than 2GB per process. You can adjust the RAM % of MySQL and Tomcat(Java) with settings in zmlocalconfig. Try:

[zimbra@roadshow ~]$ zmlocalconfig | grep mem
mysql_memory_percent = 40
tomcat_java_heap_memory_percent = 30


You can change these values with "zmprov mcf"

Yes, I've looked at that. What surprised me was that our other identically setup machine ran fine without changing the memory allocation.

I am hoping to move everything onto 64 bit FC5, which will take a lot of rebuilding. However, is this actually going to make any difference using the sun jdk for the zimbra store? It should help the MySQL problem with a 64 bit rebuild.

Does anyone know:
a) if this is true
b) if there is a handy x86_64 java 1.5 jdk I can use instead (eg ibm's)?

Ok just saw you are running FC5 which is not supported. To really make a fair test you should wait on our FC5 build rather than try to hack a FC4 build. We also plan to add 64bit support in the near future.
