Default Partitioning Layout

I plan to use a external RAID device connected via SAS.

What is the best partitioning?

A)
Use separate RAID10 Volumes for:
  • /opt/zimbra
  • /opt/zimbra/index
  • /opt/zimbra/db
  • /opt/zimbra/store
And RAID5 Volumes for:
  • /opt/zimbra/store_hsm
  • /opt/zimbra/backup

B)
Use one RAID10 Volume for:
  • /opt/zimbra
And RAID5 Volumes for:
  • /opt/zimbra/store_hsm
  • /opt/zimbra/backup

Thanks in advance.

Best i can suggest is go for option B.. where in your installation is on RAID 10 and store db on RAID5 (always)

You've given no details of how many users are on this system, no spec of the hardware, no details of whether users are always connected via fat clients or the web ui, single server or multi-server, etc. etc.... Please note that RAID5 is not recommended for servers with more than 100 users (I'd recommend you don't use it at all), search the wiki for 'performance tuning'.

Thanks for the replies.

One Server Installation:
2x Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.27 GHz
16 GB RAM
2x RAID 10 each 2x 73 SAS 15K
external Storage RAID 10 SAS 15K
external Storage for HSM RAID 5 SATA 7K
external Storage for backups RAID 5 SATA 7K

The system is for 350 users. The web ui will use by 325 and a fat client by 25 users.
