    It should redirect at least we've configured tomcat to do that but at times it doesn't work. What we do at Zimbra is only open the SSL ports to the outside. That way all external connections are forced to be SSL.

    Default Port limitation

    Actually that's not a bad approach - limiting access to 443 (even though 80 may be running within the server). iptables can be set to restrict 80 access, and upstream routers can be set to limit as well.
