You only have the loopback address for IPv6 so you need to add

127.0.0.1		localhost.localdomain localhost

Indeed, that did the trick. Thanks!

Feedback: If the hosts entry was required, there should be a check for it. You check for an MX record, right?

Also, the system should not flail away at a non-running database indefinitely.
