You don't use any 'flavour' of NE as it's not a supported platform.

There isn't currently a version for Debian and you will invalidate your support for NE if you install on that. Search bugzilla for details of any RFEs and vote on them.

Default thanks for your reply

now, will anyone give me some practical information about performing this upgrade, because it has to happen... i don't have the luxury of horsing around with bugzilla right now.

should i:

A. try upgrading with the ubuntu build (since it has debian foundations)
B. create new mail server with ubuntu, install zimbra, and migrate to new server
C. something else?

does anyone have an opinion on this?

my plan (since my zimbra is running on a vm) is to take a snapshot, try an in-place upgrade of zimbra, and if it crashes and burns, roll back the snapshot.

What upgrade are you talking about? If it's upgrading from OSS to NE then you will need to be on a supported platform to get support for NE.

That would simply be a matter of going to the link I gave you and entering the word 'debian' and voting, it's quicker than typing your reply here.

You haven't actually said in this reply but what is it you actually want to do? If you want to expand on what you've said in the post then you'll get plenty of information about how to upgrade.

I'll state it again for the record, if you're intending to install Zimbra NE on an unsupported platform then you will not receive support for that. You must install it on one of the supported platforms listed on the download page.

I'm a bit confused by your comments. The NE version of Zimbra is not free, you must pay for it and support is part of that package - does your client understand that? Whether he uses support or not he will still have to pay, if there's a problem with the paid-for parts of Zimbra will he be happy not to get the problems fixed?

Default i get it...

we misread the pricing page... we thought support was extra. thanks for clearing that up.

regardless, we have been operating for two years now with no support... obviously, we don't want anything to go wrong...

so, tell me this: is there a good way to move our existing zimbra open-source on debian to a new server running ubuntu and then upgrade at that point?

There are several threads in the forums about moving to a new server, have a search and review those but the basic steps that work are documented here: Moving ZCS to Another Server » Zimbra :: Blog The obviously important step is to make a backup (of the /opt/zimbra directory which you'll do anyway) before the move and then make sure Zimbra works on the new server and also take a backup before you do any upgrade. If you have any questions then feel free to ask.
