i just got through installing zimbra 3.1 on my OSX Server. it was not as easy as i thought it might have been (i am no server expert).

i followed the uninstall instructions to the letter. but now, my old mac osx email server (squirrelmail) is reporting the following error when i try to send an email:

Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to localhost:25 in /usr/share/squirrelmail/class/deliver/Deliver_SMTP.class.php on line 59

!!!! please help! i have no idea what to do ?! what did zimbra do to my mail services?!

regards,

shea

It's trying to connect on port 25. You need to have sendmail or postfix running there.

Question

kevin,

i do appreciate the reply. my follow-up question is as follows:

this error was not happening before i installed zimbra. does zimbra change these settings (obviously it does). and so, my question, i suppose is:

to what port does zimbra change sendmail/postfix to ?

thank you for your assistance,

shea

Well, it depends:

Zimbra has it's own MTA. If you had an MTA when installing Zimbra, it's likely that zimbra wasn't working.

What was your MTA before you installed Zimbra: Postfix or Sendmail? Zimbra uses postfix.

All you need to do is start sendmail (assuming it's already setup). Zimbra doesn't do a thing with sendmail. All of Zimbra's configurations, binaries, and stuff are located /opt/zimbra folder with the appropriate sub directory.

Zimbra doesn't change your MTA port. It wouldn't be good to do that, as most mail servers MTAs run on 25.

Talking OSX Uninstall - PLEASE HELP! (RESOLVED!)

!!! FIXED !!!

so here i sthe solution. when uninstalling Zimbra from OSX Server, all will be resolved if you (in addition to the instructions presented in the uninstall manual) also run the following:

# su -root
# rm /etc/aliases.db
# newaliases
# launchctl start org.postfix.master

... thanks to Marc (Zimbra Employee)!

Good luck to all,

Shea
