Well, it certainly doesn't take that long to start ZImbra on my 1.5GB system and you can always expect improvements in performance from future versions. You should post details of what's happening (via top for instance) when Zimbra starts. Do you have valid DNS A & MX records pointing to your server? Is there anything interesting in the Zimbra log files during start? Do you have SElinux and/or a firewall running on this machine?

OK, i have stopped and started the Zimbra service and looked what top tells me.
Most of the time there are no hard disk I/Os! Only when amavis, mysql and clamav starts i get some heavy I/Os for a short time.
The rest of the 6-7 Minutes of Zimbra startup time i have 1, 2 or 3 Java processes, that produces very high cpu usage mostly all the time (together 80-100%). All other Zimbra processes, amavis, mysql etc. produces only 10% or less CPU Usage.

I will test what raj posted above later and give you a feedback.

Ok, i have attached my zimbra.log, maybe it helps to find the problem.

This is a simple Zimbra 6 BETA 2 Quick install on Ubuntu Server 8.04 with fetchmail and only two mail accounts configured, not more and not less!

The start time of Zimbra takes about 6 minutes.
Also Zimbra's Web-interface is not reachable when fetchmail gets two-hundred mails and gives them to postfix/amavis/clamd.
Keep in mind that there are some java processes that produces very high CPU usage at startup all the time, maybe this is also a part of the problem?

The hardware of this simple test-system is:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
1GB DDR RAM
80GB Seagate 7200.7 SATA Harddisk

I have no server hardware to play around with at this time.

I have installed Zimbra RC1 on our Server Machine in a Virtualbox and it still needs 5 Minutes to start Zimbra.
The Server has 2x Intel Xeon L5430, 8 Gigabyte RAM (2,5 is for the Virtual Machine) 5x SAS Harddrives in RAID 5.
Yes i know that Raid 5 is not optimal, but our Zimbra Server is for 40-50 Users only.

Have you installed another virus scanner on the server that sits in memory and checks file access ?

No i'm using a minimal Ubuntu Server 8.04 without X.
I only installed open-ssh, mc and Zimbra 6 RC1, but nothing else.
DNS is provided by the Mandriva Domain Controller in our LAN.

You see it's a very minimalistic setup.
Its also not a Ubuntu Problem, because Zimbra on CentOS needs a minute more to start.
Did you find some errors in the logs i posted above?

Default for comparison...

This is Zimbra 5 on Centos 5.latest over ESX Server 3.0.2 on a dual Xeon 3.2Ghz, with 2GB allocated and reserved for the vm. Underlying disk is U320 10KRPM with RAID 1.

There was no contention between VMs for cpu at the time.

Code:
[root@goose ~]# su - zimbra
[zimbra@goose ~]$ zmcontrol stop

The same on my server:

Quote:
zimbra@zimbra:/root$ time zmcontrol start
Host mail.local.lan
Starting ldap...Done.
Starting logger...Done.
Starting mailbox...Done.
Starting antispam...Done.
Starting antivirus...Done.
Starting snmp...Done.
Starting spell...Done.
Starting mta...Done.
Starting stats...Done.

real 6m9.568s
user 3m18.030s
sys 2m43.900s
The most time is needed by "mailbox" and also "mta" and "logger".
