Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS (Dapper Drake)

Make sure you get the server version.

My instructions assume that you have another box running as DNS. I'm not sure how to make the zimbra box act as a DNS.

damn

I would assume there is some way to setup up the MX in the host file to self look at itself, but regrettably I was not prepared to be a complete DNS genius while learning this!

I think I may be done with this project, but I'll sleep on it again before I say "done".

There's no way to do this, you require a DNS server on the LAN so that Postfix can do a DNS lookup and resolve it's own LAN IP address - no way around it I'm afraid. The set-up for DNS in the Ubuntu article should be fairly easy to follow or use Webmin to do the config as you can edit the files using that.

You don't have to have a separate server running DNS, it can be on the Zimbra server as shown in most of the wiki articles. That's done for convenience (and that DNS server is used only by the Zimbra server) and for users that don't want it on a second server although you can, obviously, have a DNS server located anywhere you like on the LAN.
