Default 3.1 on FC4 problems

Earlier today I migrated my system from FC3 to FC4. I also migrated from ZCS 3.1.0-328 on FC3 to 3.1.0-332 on FC4.

On reinstalling Zimbra, the install failed the first time. After reading some posts, I reinstalled a second time. This worked fine.

Initially I experienced no problems. I could user Zimbra in via web interface or thunderbird. Then about an hour later, the system crashed ...

On hard reboot, Zimbra comes back up, no problems. BUT, when I try to run a "zmcontrol status" -- it crashes the system again. I can hear the machine thrashing, and I almost immediately lose access to my remote connection. If I do a CTRL-C from the server locally, I get back the remote connection and all is okay. Very bizarre.

Is it possible that on upgrading from FC3 to FC4 I inadvertently installed applications that are conflicting with Zimbra?

Not sure where to start as far getting to the bottom of this. Any other ideas?

two things I just noticed since the FC3 to FC4 upgrade ...

when I run "ps -aux" I see several apps running owned by "postfix". i never noticed this before. could it be that there are two instances of postfix running, one from the FC4 upgrade, and one from zimbra?

also, i noticed that not all the files inside /opt/zimbra are owned by user "zimbra". there are several directories owned by root. is this how it should be set up?

thanks for any help you can offer...

please let me know if there are specific logfiles to pull...

Try /etc/init.d/postfix stop Just to see if an FC4 one is there. Also post "ps -ef| grep zimbra" and "ps-ef|grep postifx" use [code] /CODE] around the post to make them easy to read.

Thanks, Kevin. This morning I restarted the zimbra server, and several hours later, it is down.

Seems like something is interfering with Tomcast or MySQL ... never had this problem until I upgraded from FC3 to FC4. I'm able to "stop" the zimbra server and "start" it, but after a few minutes (or hours), it crashes again ...

Thanks in advance for the help, Kevin. Or anyone else!

Anything in /opt/zimbra/log/zimbra.log around the time Tomcat crashed?

Hi Kevin,

The server went down again after only an hour of uptime. This time I hooked up a monitor (had been connecting remotely) and now I'm seeing 'out of memory' errors everywhere. Did a little more digging on this forum, and I think I'm experiencing the same problem as descibed in this thread:

The mailbox and mta dies in FC4 GA version

Was this ever resolved? Since upgrading to FC4 I can't keep Zimbra up for more than an hour. Seems to be a memory "leak" somewhere ...

Below are snippets from the /opt/zimbra/log/zimbra.log just before and during the crash:

Definitely some kind of memory issue with FC4 and 3.1. This machine has 512mb ram, and never had any problems running FC3 with 3.x. In fact, I haven't had to reboot this machine in months until today.

Also -- FYI -- I've been running a separate LAMP server on this box with the previous FC3/ZCS 3.1 setup. Never had any problems with it.

Thanks Kevin.

512meg is the very bottom of our requirements. So no surprise if you've got more than 1 or 2 users on the system you may run into problems. My guess is FC4 added some more functionality which cause a general mem shortage on the system. You can try to reduce the effect by turning on things like logger, etc. Other than that the real solution is to get some more RAM.

Default Follow-up

Just wanted to post a follow-up ...

... I took your advice, Kevin, and upgraded the system from 512mb to 2GB RAM. The system has been up now for 22 days, not a single hiccup.

Thanks!
