Let me just add that server.com is not the mail server, and will never be the mail server. Only mail.server.com will be the mail server.

keep in mind that db.server.com has been edited. postoffice is our current mail server. It's just a very simple linux box with sendmail and local mailboxes setup.

Also keep in mind that postoffice is at our colo connected to the internet while mail is behind our firewall for testing.

I'm starting to think that it might be better to just uninstall and re-install from scratch.

What would be the "correct" way to set up the server to have a hostname of mail.server.com, but set it up so that it accepts email from, and users can log into user@server.com?

It's that MX record pointing to postoffice.server.com that's killing you, you also have no 'A' records and no CNAME records. I believe you can have multiple mail servers on a network but I'm not experienced in setting-up BIND to give you advice, all I can tell you is that your current set-up won't work with the two mailservers.

Then how would one do a migration and test prior to rolling out the new server?

Well, one would set-up multiple MX records to point to the correct servers and fix the DNS config files with correct A & CNAME records. Have a look here for multiple MX records.

BTW, those DNS changes didn't work.

I've been thinking about this and I don't understand why the zimbra server would work this way.

Everything I have in the settings have two server names, mail.server.com everywhere, except under domains I have server.com.

    The hosts file is correct.

Why would MX records, that are only looked at to see where mail should be delivered have anything to do with a user login or for checking the mail queue.

Postfix requires DNS for sending mail. SO you must have a proper DNS setup (not just entries in /etc/hosts). What is the current error your getting?

my problem isn't with sending mail. I haven't even gotten to that point. The current error I'm getting I posted above:

if I go to the status page for mail queues I get some numbers rather then just "loading" (all zeros). But if I go to mail.server.com I get another error:

    name: SyntaxError
message: Syntax error in parameter list
message: Syntax error in parameter list
    line: 442
    SourceURL: https://mail.server.com:7071/zimbra...?v=060414125850

When I try to login as user@server.com I get this:

2006-04-25 08:53:14,426 INFO [http-80-Processor100] [ip=192.168.123.192;name=user@server.com;] ZimbraContext - ServiceException while putting soap session refresh data
