Default POP and IMAP can't work

We have no problem using Zimbra thru the web browser, but we can't download emails thru email programs such as Thunderbird and Outlook etc. Yet we can send email thru these email programs. Any idea what could be the possible cause?

We tried both POP and IMAP. And have enable POP in both admin and user account.

Thanks,
Boon Hong.

You haven't given much info to go on, how about: Zimbra version and release; which operating system; what error messages you get; are there any errors in the log files; have you actually enabled the POP & IMAP services in the Admin UI?

Please update your forum profile with the output of:

Code:
zmcontrol -v

I finally get it to work by changing the default port in Outlook to the non-standard port used by Zimbra:

IMAP: 7143, SSL: 7993

POP: 7110, SSL: 7900

That is incorrect, Zimbra uses standard ports for the IMAP and POP3 servers, you have a Zimbra configuration problem. Do you have the proxy installed and enabled and is this a single server install?

Hi Bill,

Thanks for replying. My installation is single server (on VMware iESX) and the version is:

Release 5.0.11_GA_2695.UBUNTU8 UBUNTU8 FOSS edition

I didn't change the default configuration during Zimbra Installation and the proxy wasn't enable previously.

Cheers,
Boon Hong.

OK, check if the proxy is installed/running with the following:

Code:
zmproxyctl status
zmprov gs server.domain.com | grep zimbraServiceEnabled
zmprov gs server.domain.com | grep zimbraServiceInstalled
If it's in, then run this:

Code:
zmproxyctl stop
zmprov ms server.domain.com -zimbraServiceEnabled imapproxy
zmcontrol stop
zmcontrol start
If neither of the above are true then you still need to do the following command to reset the ports, run the following (on one line):

Code:
zmprov -l ms server.domain.com zimbraPop3BindPort 110 zimbraPop3SSLBindPort 995 zimbraPop3ProxyBindPort 7110 zimbraPop3SSLProxyBindPort 7995 zimbraImapBindPort 143 zimbraImapSSLBindPort 993 zimbraImapProxyBindPort 7143 zimbraImapSSLProxyBindPort 7993

Hi Bill,

I have followed your instruction and run these in Terminal, but it didn't work. Now I can't access either on standard or non-standard ports.

Next, I login to web admin and notice that the proxy has been disabled and enable it again. When I save, the system prompt me for proxy setting and I choose the recommended settings:

IMAP: 7143, SSL: 7993
Proxy: 143, SSL: 993

POP: 7110, SSL: 7900
Proxy: 110, SSL: 900

Now It works again, but I still have to use the non-standard port, which is 7993 for IMAP instead of 993 etc.

You do have the proxy enabled on that server and it shouldn't be, use the command I gave you above to disable it and then run the command to set the ports. Do not enable the proxy on your server once it's been disabled.

Hi Bill,

As mentioned, I have run your command but all the ports no longer works until I login to web admin to enable the proxy. Is there something I missed out?

Did you run these commands:

Code:
zmproxyctl stop
zmprov ms server.domain.com -zimbraServiceEnabled imapproxy
zmcontrol stop
zmcontrol start
if not then run them and then run the command to change the prots.
