Default mta/saslauth fails to start, no status

zcs-NETWORK-5.0.11_GA_2695.UBUNTU8.2008111702335

Ubuntu 8.04.1 server

Had this running on a vm on my laptop, working fine inside my
lan environment.

Took it down, installed it on a vm on a bastion host so that I
could try it in a more *real* environment, ie with internet access.

Install went fine, all that. No worries.
However, the mta and saslauth don't start.

Status doesn't say, started or stopped, just doesn't say.
$ zmcontrol status
Host
ldap Running
logger Running
mailbox Running
snmp Running
spell Running
stats Running

Nothing.

I get this:
$ sh -x ~/bin/zmmtactl status
+ BASE=/opt/zimbra
+ SCRIPTS=zmmtaconfigctl postfix zmsaslauthdctl
+ STATUS=0
+ /opt/zimbra/bin/zmmtaconfigctl status
+ R=0
+ [ 0 -ne 0 ]
+ /opt/zimbra/bin/postfix status
+ R=1
+ [ 1 -ne 0 ]
+ echo postfix is not running
postfix is not running
+ STATUS=1
+ /opt/zimbra/bin/zmsaslauthdctl status
+ R=1
+ [ 1 -ne 0 ]
+ echo zmsaslauthdctl is not running
zmsaslauthdctl is not running
+ STATUS=1
+ exit 1

Where to look deeper?

All clues welcomed.

Based on the output of your zmcontrol status, the zimbra mta is either not installed or not configured to run.

Hey Brian;

Thanks kindly for the reply.

any idea how I might attempt to resolve this?

the postfix parts are installed, the binaries exist, etc.

Stop Zimbra with 'zmcontrol stop' then check if there are any zimbra processes running and kill them if there is. When you've done that start zimbra again with 'zmcontrol start' and check the log files for error messagse, post details here of what you find.

BTW, you should also make sure that there isn't another mail server running on port 25 and that any firewall and SElinux is disabled on the zimbra server.
