Default Help! Upgrade problems from 5.09 to 5.10, mysql won't start
I've screwed up my upgrade from 5.09 to 5.10

I think that the cause of the problem was an aborted attempt to merge Zimbra and Samba as per
Zimbra Integration With Samba - Ubuntu Based (Similar To AD And Exchange) - Page 3 | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

I couldn't get the upgrade to process so I reversed the changes specified in the above link and ran the upgrade process.

The result of the upgrade process was:

Where the proposed solution (without a confirmation of resolution) is to reset the ldap and mysql passwords. Unfortunately, running zmldappasswd also gives an error

I've managed to progress a bit.

It seems that running the upgrade a second time has created a blank config.save file, so every subsequent upgrade has failed because the config file was empty.

I ran the upgrade again, this time I copied over a config.save file from the 5.0.9 backup to the /.saveconfig/config.save before accepting the licence. The rest of the upgrade proceeded as follows:

Your DNS is not quite right by the looks of your /etc/hosts file aswell. Please post the following

Yes and no on the backup. My automatic backup took one from a day ago, but the tape wasn't changed over the day before so I don't have an immediate backup. Stupid of me I know, but I'd like to get it working if possible without using the day old backup.

I've found a post with the exact same problem which has been solved, but the info about the solution is a bit cryptic and not complete. Can anyone elaborate a bit?

mysql.server Not Running

The solution provided was:

Zimbra support performed the following fixes. The basic issue was an out-of-sync sql database.

1. Modified the /opt/zimbra/my.cnf file to restore following values.
innodb_buffer_pool_size = 1024000000
innodb_flush_method = O_DIRECT

2. Manually set the db.version to 53 which was 52 earlier. May be you put an older directory /opt/zimbra/db/data

3. Also turned off imapproxy which is not necessary in your single server installation.

I'm sorry I cannot be more specific as this was all the info. provided.

After hours of reading and trying just about everything, I have managed to get the upgrade completed and am up and running without loss of information.

The root cause of the initial problem was an error during the upgrade process which, when the upgrade was run again without fixing the problem replaced the config.save with a default, mostly blank one.

This was fixed by running the install again, then before accepting the licence copying an old config.save over the one created in /opt/zimbra/.saveconfig/config.save. It's important to use one from the version you are upgrading from. They are located in /opt/zimbra/.saveconfig//<#>

The next issue seems to indeed be a /etc/hosts problem, but I can't see where my problem lies. To get around this, I modified the /opt/zimbra/conf/my.logger.cnf and /opt/zimbra/conf/my.cnf so that the bind address pointed to the network address and not 'localhost'

I then re-ran the install script which was able complete the upgrade which completed the database upgrade as well.

I suspect that this is not the best option and that the bind address may get wiped at the next upgrade, so if anyone know what's wrong with my etc/hosts file I would be thankful for the help.
