Default Zimbra Authenticating over MySQL instead of LDAP

I'm not terribly familiar with Zimbra at all, but we are looking for a mail solution besides GMail. We currently have an authentication system we built on top of MySQL. I was curious if it is possible to configure Zimbra to use a mysql table for authenticating users rather than LDAP. (Im not sure if this is easy, I was told LDAP was the only auth mechanism for Zimbra).

Also, if a MySQL table can be used, can Salt Keys and encryptions methods be specified so Zimbra can match the supplied password to the encrypted password in the table.

If it is possible, any references or URLs would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not an expert on this, but I think you might be able to write a custom ZimbraCustomAuth subclass that does the right thing. Put it in an extension and ZimbraCustomAuth.register() it at startup.

Another powerful way could be using Penrose as a LDAP front-end of your Mysql DB
