Zimbra

The linux box I wish to run Zimbra Open Source on is a an AMD Athlon X2 4200 running Fedora 9 x86_64.

In the little research that I have done the Fedora vesrion supported is x86 version 7.

Does this mean it does not work

? or that it hasn't been tested, and probably will work

?

If it will not work, where can I get the best linux for the hardware (AMD Athlon X2 4200) that will work?

Hi, Welcome to the Forums!

It may be possible to build Zimbra on FC9, it's not recommended. You may sacrifice one of the best things about Zimbra: low maintenance!

Also since not too many people are doing that (running ZCS on FC9) it will be that much harder to get help if you should need it.

You should reinstall a supported version of your OS of choice. If you can't reinstall, perhaps consider using another machine. (You should be able to build another machine with those specifications quite inexpensively.)

I have no problem installing a different distro. But rather than pick one based on ignorance, I was hoping someone would point me to a free linux that works well on the hardware I have, and plays well with Zimbra.

One potential issue is versions, for example, it is easy to find the latest Fedora, but finding Fedora 7 wasn't obvious.

If someone could post a link to the "best" version that would be best.

There's no such thing as a 'best' distribution, if you mean for a Zimbra server then one of the builds that we provide would be the better choice. If you want a stable, long term supported distribution the I'd recommend CentOS5.2 - it's a binary compatible rebuild of RHEL5.

"Best" is all relative..it depends which flavor of linux you are most confortable with.
From our exp. Running CentOS has given us almost 0 problems and great smooth ugrades from versions way back more than 1 year old.

** CentOS is not supported platform (yet!!) its 100% binary compatible with RHEL version so you need to download ZCS RHEL version to install ZCS on CentOS. Also please read the CentOS install steps in forurms/wiki.
