Default Timeout errors in webmail interface

Hi Guys,

today our Zimbra install is doing strange things.

It is suddenly running slowly for a start and is throwing up errors and timeouts.
I checked the status of the Services and was told that the mailbox was stopped and that Tomcat was not running.
I stopped and started the Services and they all started up again correctly.
I hoped that was the end of it but as User told me shortly after that it was still acting strangely. Checked the Services again and they are all on.

Have now had an error myself again, sometimes when I try to open a new compose window I just get an HTTP timeout error and other times I get the message below;

method - AjxRpc.prototype._invoke
detail - [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIXMLHttpRequest.send]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: http://192.168.x.x/zimbra/js/Ajax_al...v=071016181552 :: anonymous :: line 1439" data: no]
code - AjxException.UNKNOWN_ERROR
msg - Unknown Error

At other times it works fine!
Any clues please Guys, do you think it could be the physical server itself or Network connection? (no other signs of this on the Network though)
Or does the error message indicate something about Zimbra itself.

Network edition 4.5.9, CentOS 4, Firefox 2

Thanks
Russ

Tomcat has just stopped itself again, can't get into interface at all now.

Services look like this;

antispam Running
antivirus Running
ldap Running
logger Running
mailbox Stopped
tomcat is not running
mta Running
snmp Running
spell Running
stats Running

Restarted Services again but this happened;

Starting ldap...Done.
Starting logger...Done.
Starting mailbox...Done.
Starting antispam...Done.
Starting antivirus...FAILED
clamd failed to start

Starting snmp...Done.
Starting spell...Done.
Starting mta...Done.
Starting stats...Done.

And now zmcontrol status says this;

antispam Running
antivirus Stopped
amavisd running pid: 4211
zmclamdctl is not running
ldap Running
logger Running
mailbox Running
mta Running
snmp Running
spell Running
stats Running

So is it just Clamav and Amavis doing strange things?
Hopefully there is a simple answer!
Thanks
Russ

Are you going through a proxy at all ? How much memory does the server have ? What is the load on the server ? Any network changes taken place at all ?

Hi Uxbod,

we are in fact going through a Messagelabs Proxy server but have been for sometime.
Up until now nothing strange has happened though.

I have the Messagelabs server set up in the Admin interface as the Relay MTA but have not assigned a port to it, as I said, it's been working this way for a while without issue.
I have turned off the Spam and Virus filtering but all mail is now being held in the deferred queue and not delivered!
I believe it has 3GB, if I run a free -m command I get this;

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3042 3021 20 0 0 28
-/+ buffers/cache: 2993 48
Swap: 2000 558 1441

Is this the problem, are we using all the memory for some reason as indicated above?

You will need to check your Log Files - Zimbra :: Wiki for any error messages why ClamAV is not starting. With ZCS down do a
Code:
ps aux | grep -i clam
and make sure no rogue AV processes are running. You should also look at performing a upgrade to ZCS 5.0.X at somepoint.

Hi Uxbod,

I get this at the grep command;

zimbra 28715 0.0 0.0 3560 812 ? Ss 15:36 0:01 /opt/zimbra/clamav/bin/freshclam --config-file=/opt/zimbra/conf/freshclam.conf -d
--checks=12
zimbra 30838 0.0 0.0 3884 624 pts/0 D+ 16:44 0:00 grep -i clam

Does that mean anything?

I had actually stopped ClamAV through the Admin interface previously before stopping the Services to do this if that makes any difference.

Thanks

I think you may be right to suspect the ram, I think we are now pushing our Zimbra Server over the edge, it is running close to maximum usage.
Is this possibly stopping ClamAV start up?

I will up the ram.

That process is the defs update which might be failing (check logs) - try this process ClamAV - Reset Defs DB - Zimbra :: Wiki

When I went to the Zimbra Server last thing last night it was complaining about ram so I restarted and it began to run correctly again. This morning I upgraded the ram to 6GB from 3GB.
On restarting after this the Tomcat service is not running according to zmcontrol status and I cannot access the Web interface.
I have not tried the instructions above from Mmorse, would this be anything to do with it as that would be my next step?
I have checked the permissions on my redo.log and they are correct.

What's the obvious answer Guys as our Users are getting a little impatient with me!
Thanks
Russ
