I think this is the answer, from the zimbra.log!

    Jul 1 10:36:03 mailserver1 zmtomcatmgr[25428]: stale pid 24701 found in /opt/zimbra/log/zmtomcatmgr.pid: No such process

How do I stop the tomcat pid please? I can never remember the syntax! (If this is the answer)

    Thanks
    Russ

The mailbox service is also not running but I guess this is linked to the above error.

    Code:
    su - zimbra
    zmcontrol shutdown
this will stop everything. Once it says it is down perform a ps aux and check that no old ZCS processes are running. If so kill them off, but not with a -9, and then check that they have died gracefully. Then fire up ZCS again and check your logfiles to ensure all is good.

I am assuming that you also have a GOOD BACKUP in place ?

I'm not sure there is anything running that shouldn't be?

I killed the 24308 just in case but it's had no effect.

    Sorry about the strange lines!

So do you mean by no effect it still does not start up ? Anything new in your logfiles ? Have a look under /opt/zimbra for something like _yourserverfqdn.err_ for MySQL and make sure that has no errors. Sorry not familiar with V4.

No still doesn't start and I can see no files under the /opt/zimbra directory similar to that which you mentioned.
Nor anything like this under the log directory.

    Code:
    cat /opt/zimbra/db/data/*.err
