Default Partitioning - SLES

Hi Gang!

I'm installing Zimbra on a RAID 5 array with a half -terrabyte of space and my OS us SuSE Linux Enterprise Server.

I know that it is suggested that the Zimbra store, db and index all reside on separate partitions but how are you guys breaking these up?

I'm brain cramming with coworkers but everyone seems to have a different idea of how to partition.

Anyone have a similar set-up? What worked for you?

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the forums and great to see the avatar

Have you had a read of Performance Tuning Guidelines for Large Deployments - Zimbra :: Wiki ? Certainly with respect to using RAID5.

OK. So no RAID 5. I should have remembered that from class. We went over that document. *bad alumni. *no cookie.

So RAID 10. I know I am supposed to sway away from parity but in a 10 array the parity is actually from the mirror and not from a parity check. So would that be suitable or should I be looking at RAID 0 or 1 only?

Also look at using LVM so you can extend your partitions on the fly without any downtime. Also what sort of array will you be using for your 500GB of storage ?

Good call on LVM, I probably wouldn't have thought about it until I finished and then profusely slammed my head against my keyboard.

As far as storage goes. I am going to be using our SAN. How that is going to be set up is yet to be determined as it is not up and running just yet. Any suggestions?

Yay somebody with a SAN. Which make and model (I don't use one for Zimbra, but I do a lot with SANs in my full time job).

I presume you will have two HBAs in your server ? What speed will they be ?

The SAN is a Dot HILL. As far as the model and HBA info I do not know. I haven't been involved in the implementation process just yet. That is further down the road.

So much fun to look forward to. :-)~
