Default VM / Firewall related issue

Hi, we are an educational establishment in the UK, looking for an open source email system that our students can use. We found Zimbra and have been looking at the Virtual Machine as there is little knowledge of Linux within ICT Support so we thought this may be the best option (especially as we are testing).

At home whilst testing I can set up the server and run it perfectly fine, but at the school the network is behind an ISA Firewall and I cannot get it to get past the final setup process when the services are supposed to start. I have looked through the wiki, documentation, forum and there does not seem to be a solution other that split DNS which seems unnecessary (plus as Linux novices do not know how to setup), we run a Vanilla 2003 Network and in this the virtual machine has A record and will shortly have an MX record in DNS.

If you can shed some light on where I might be going wrong that would be fantastic.

Thanks for your time

Welcome to the forums

You will certainly require a MX record for things to work. Until then you could setup a Split DNS - Zimbra :: Wiki architecture which will work just fine. This is due to it being sat behind you ISA on a private LAN.

Also, if you post these details it will help us even more
Code:
su - zimbra
cat /etc/hosts
cat /etc/resolv.conf
dig _yourdomainname_ mx
dig _yourdomainname_ ns
host `hostname` <- note backticks and not double quotes
On another note I recognise that school name ... what region are you based ?

thanks for the reply Uxbod, firstly the school is in the West Midlands near Wolverhampton if that helps.

I will have a go at getting that info for you, I am new to linux so it may take a while, I have had a look at the split DNS wiki too, we have local DNS Servers here and was wondering whether it would affect any of these, the wiki is not very clear on that - or I have missed it which is more than likely

Thanks for your time

Mark

Does your DNS servers only serve the local LAN, or does it provide resolution to the internet aswell ? If it is purely for internal servers then that can be used just fine. Setup a A record for your ZCS machine and a MX record aswell for the domain it will be handling. Then on your ZCS machine just point it as your DNS servers by updating /etc/resolv.conf.

the DNS servers are local to the lan, we use an ISA firewall to forward all out Internet requests to the LEA Based DNS Servers. like i have said i am new to linux so it may take me a while to sort out what is needed but i am willing to give it a go

again, thanks for your time it is much appreciated

Mark

Yes I was born in Derby and worked in and around Birmingham so the name sounded familiar
