Performance tips?

Hi,

I am running Zimbra on the following machine:

2.0Ghz C2D
2 GB DDR2 667
3ware 8600 PCI SATA RAID (32-bit)
2x 80GB SATA (RAID 1)
1Gb NIC

Using Debian 4.0

Is there anything I can do to improve performance at all? The AJAX interface is sluggish (I know its client-side). There are approx 20 users maximum that would use it but usually 5 at the any one time.

What version of Zimbra ? NE / FOSS and what release ?

What do the commands free and uptime show ?

Is that processor single core? That could be be slowing things down a tad, the java engine can be a hungry beast, if you can swap in a quad core without too much trouble, you may notice a boost.

It could be the hard drive array too, but you unless you notice the drives being worked very hard, i'd rule this out.

The main thing though, is define 'sluggish'. The ajax client is slower than outlook or a decent mail client, but arguably it offers more feartures, so a lot of people regard that as being a fair trade off.

Running on a lan, from a decent server, on a fast client I can launch the zimbra client, login and read a mail within a few seconds. Closing the tab the client is in and relaunching has it fully open in three seconds, I dont think it gets any faster than that.

What kind of launch/access times are you experiencing?

It also depends on what release hachaboob is running. If running V5 then when first opening the client it only loads specific pieces of JavaScript http://www.zimbra.com/blog/archives/...y_loading.html

It is always difficult to ascertain whether the client or server is at fault with respect to performance, hence asking for the free and uptime output. Least can try and nail whether the server is the issue.

C2D is short for Core2 Duo, which is a dual-core CPU.
