Default Inconsistent Zimbra install behaviour

I've tried to install zimbra over the last few days and have run into som odd problems

1) Tried to install on my 1024MB RAM VPS, no go, people said "get more RAM!"

I got more RAM, now I run 2048 MB RAM

2) I tried to install Zimbra on a local virtual machine with 1GB ram to test things out, installed just fine

So i go confident back to my 2GB RAM VPS to install Zimbra, but,

3) It still refuse to install, I get the following error messages during install, everything goes smoothly until:

Code:

Moving /tmp/zmsetup.02032008-015209.log to /opt/zimbra/log
This is " zcs-5.0.2_GA_1975.RHEL4.20080130212006.tgz "
What gives?

- My hostname and MX record is set up right
- SElinux is disabled
- IPtables is disabled
- Sendmail is removed
- /etc/sudoers is fixed
- Spamassassin is not installed
- Antivirus is not installed
- I run CentOS 4, I know, I know "Not supported", even tough I doubt the RHEL logo can help much Ran centOS 4 on my local test server and installed fine

Where does Zimbra give the :

zmlocalconfig -e mailboxd_java_heap_memory_percent="40"
zmlocalconfig -e mysql_memory_percent="30"

commands when installing? Does it see MY RAM or does it see the servers entire RAM?

"zmlocalconfig |grep mem" shows the values I've just set, even tough with little or no effect, RAM usage is just as with standard values

I KNOW it can install on 1GB RAM so I want to force the installer to take less, tried to open another SSH window to pass in the commands during the "do you want to notify zimbra" question, but it doesn't seem to do anything. It did not seem to have any effect on my local test server either after I've installed it.

Pretty please, help

Update 1: The server actually started Zimbra after a reboot, but it's corrupt, Documents give a nasty "HTTP ERROR: 500" and upload doesn't work just to mention the ones I've seen so far. The RAM usage is deranged with no effect from zmlocalconfig -e mailboxd_java_heap_memory_percent="xx" and zmlocalconfig -e mysql_memory_percent="xx",

Update 2 I tried to install with ./install.sh -s and then hack the install script to use 50% of default heap size values, had no effect, tried to install MTA and Store on one VPS and the rest on another, had no effect on the error messages

what vps are you using? the problem is that the vps only provides a virtual server with a total amount of memory; applications won't necessarily see that as a monolithic contiguous segment of memory, which is what the jvm in particular needs

this vps article may or may not help

I'm using a Virtuozzo VPS, so burst memory, I suspect a Xen configuration would be better suited for Zimbra, because as it seems, burst memory and Zimbra is not a good match
