Upgrade from 4.5.5 to 4.5.6 on Ubuntu 6.06LTS fails: Session terminated ...

I have an Ubuntu 6.06LTS server running ZCS Version 4.5.5_GA_838.UNBUNTU6 May 3, 2007. This installation was moved from a backup of the same version (Version 4.5.5_GA_838.FC5 May 3, 2007) on a Fedora 7 machine. The move was done to get all servers running on the same platform (Ubuntu) and a supported platform for the zimbra version. The move went fine, hostname stayed the same and the server has been running and processing mail successfully since the move.

I am trying to get to zcs v5.0 GA. So was going to upgrade through the successive versions of zcs to get from 4.5.5 to 5.0. The upgrade to 4.5.6 terminates with a message which reads:

Session terminated, killing shell... ...killed.

Then says UPGRADE FAILED - exiting

There are several suspicious errors in the install.log file about directories not existing:

Selecting previously deselected package zimbra-core.
(Reading database ... 89270 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking zimbra-core (from .../zimbra-core_4.5.6_GA_1044.UBUNTU6_i386.deb) ...
Setting up zimbra-core (4.5.6_GA_1044.UBUNTU6) ...
chmod: cannot access `/opt/zimbra/postfix/conf/postfix-script': No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `/opt/zimbra/postfix/conf/post-install': No such file or directory
mkdir: cannot create directory `/opt/zimbra/ssl': File exists
mkdir: cannot create directory `/opt/zimbra/.ssh': File exists

I have read through the log files and searched the forums; all posts with similar errors appear to be on unsupported platforms (and have solutions which don't apply to ubuntu ie comment out requiretty in sudoers file) or are dead end threads.

I have attached both files and would greatly appreciate any help that can be offered.

Are you trying to run the installer as zimbra or root?

I am running the installer as root.

Can you make sure that you log totally out and login originally as root?

It looks like it's trying to kill the zimbra session and kills your session.

My first guess is that your root session is a child of a zimbra session.

Thanks for the quick replies;

I was running it using sudo -i to become root, from my normal user name.

To be sure it was a root session I set a root password (hadn't had to set it on Ubuntu yet) and connected remotely to the server via ssh and ran the install.sh from there.

The end result was the same.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I re-ran the 4.5.5 installation over the top of the existing install, primarily to validate the an installation script can run successfully against my existing server. It did run through completely. Afterwards I tried to re-run the 4.5.6 install and it failed exactly the same.
