| | | [SOLVED] Upgrade and server move - Internal mail deferred Dear all,
I hope that I haven't missed this elsewhere, but googling and searching here have not helped me yet...
I upgraded from 7.5.6 to 7.5.10 on my previous server (debian etch) and then restored a backup of that /opt/zimbra on to a new server (ubuntu 6.06).
Presumably I have somehow mucked up the dns, hosts file or something, even though I copied them straight from the previous install: /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 zimbra.xxx.co.uk zimbra resolv.conf
nameserver my.isp's.external.dns
nameserver my.isp's.other.xternal.dns hostname
zimbra
Now I realise that this is not the conventional setup, but it worked before, and I was following the howto for debian etch.
Now I can send and receive external mail, but for mail within the domain I get:
Dec 19 11:48:17 zimbra postfix/qmgr[4821]: BCA369E0059: to=, relay=none, delay=0, status=deferred (delivery temporarily suspended: connect to zimbra.scisite.co.uk[212.57.250.229]: Connection timed out)
I have tried various instructions for etc/hosts, resolv.conf and hostname, but with no success. All suggestions gratefully received! |

| | | further info Sorry, should have added that the server is behind NAT with ports 25,80,443 opened through the NAT device.
the address zimbra.xxx.co.uk resolves to the external IP, not the 192.168 internal address. There is no internal DNS on the LAN. |

For any installation of Zimbra behind NAT or a firewall with a private IP address you'll need a Split DNS set-up.

127.0.0.1 zimbra.xxx.co.uk zimbra | In addition to the Split DNS, your hosts file is incorrect. There's a Ubuntu how-to on the wiki and you'll find details of the osts file in the product documentation or mentioned a ton of times in the forums, please search for the answer.

If that is the case then you will need to setup a local copy of bind and use that as Zimbra's resolver. See Split DNS - Zimbra :: Wiki and search the forum for other notes in "split DNS" for details of the small amount of jiggery pokery required. |

| | | split dns OK split DNS here we come.
How did my previous system work without it - is there smthg different about either Debian Etch or v7.5.6?
Tnks for help so far.... |

| | | Fixed OK all, thanks, split dns up and running but:
our zimbra box is not the domain's MX from the outside, and all outgoing mail is routed through our isp whose server is called mail.scisite.co.uk. All mail is collected via pop from this server
Of course now we can't find mail.scisite.co.uk from the zimbra box, as it thinks it replying for the domain authoritatively.
So, in addition, we put at the end of /etc/bind/db/mydomain.co.uk
mail IN A external.ip.of.mail
so it resolves correctly!
Best regards all - Merry Festive Season! |

| | | FIXED - typo of course I meant to add a line to
/etc/bind/db.domain.co.uk
not
/etc/bind/db/domain.co.uk |

| | You might also like to look at Split Domain if you have another mail server in your domain.
