Default How do I install from source

I need to try to install 4.5.10 on a Debian 4.0 box from source (I'm trying to switch servers from Fedora Core 4 to Debian).

Can someone tell me how to go about this or where to find some documentation? I can't find the usual configure, make and make-install files in the source directory I've downloaded. Only a makeinstall file in the build directory.

Thanks

Ray

As there is a Debian 4 build for Version 5, why don't you wait for that or use the beta?

Hi Bill

It's a versions thing. I'm currently running 4.5.10 on FC4 but I need to upgrade the server and I want use Debian 4.0r1.

In order to move our 60 staff and all their mail etc over I need to get 4.5.10 running on Debian before upgrading to 5.0 so I can restore the mail with the same version.

I'm currently trying this on a test box before braving it on the real thing.

i'll save you a lot of grey hair and wasted time - don't. use the debian 3.1 or ubuntu binary on debian4 - search the forums for the workarounds.

backup, backup, backup. if you can, try this on another box other than your mail server, there's a 80% chance of rain and catastrophic failure.

Thanks dijichi2

If only I'd downloaded RC1 for FC4 when it was available, I could have saved a lot of messing about.

I'll search for the workarounds for the Debian 3.1 binary.
