Is this a new install or a currently running server or an upgrade? If it's a currently installed Zimbra then what's changed? What errors are in the logs? How about the operating system and Zimbra version?
Posting 'it doesn't work' really doesn't give us much of a clue as to where the problem may lay, please post some more detailed info on the problem.

fedora 7
ZCS Version: Release 4.5.9_GA_1454.RHEL5_20071016203610 F7 FOSS edition
It's a mostly fresh install, been around for a week now.
Nothing meaningful in /var/log/zimbra, other than it tells me that everything is running and fine. Could this be something in the MTA settings?
Have you verified all your network settings, ie. firewall, dns, ISP restrictions? What happens when you telnet to the server on port 25 from an external host.?
Also make sure that SElinux is disabled.

Bill
seems he solved it (I'm sure he'll explain shortly)

I chucked these settings into
Global Settings>MTA>MTA Trusted networks
127.0.0.0/8 142.25.97.0/24 127.0.0.1 142.25.97.202
I then had an entry put into some other mail relay so that I could send mail.
