Curious as to which of the three LVM, Perl(zcsTools), simple(just rsync), or a mix of your own in Open Source Edition Backup Procedure - Zimbra :: Wiki you were using?
The simple doesn't realy check for any lingering processs, so you could technically continue with the rsync and then have a bit of trouble on start. The Perl(zcsTools) should check/kill any lingering suff though.
