ok.. did a fresh install of centos5 64bit OS... and got the RHEL 5 64bit file as suggestion...

followed the steps listed out here : Centos 5 Install Guide

and ran the command.. sh -x ./install.sh and this is what i get ..

Zimbra thinks it's performing an upgrade. This is probably because of an old rpm file. Run the uninstaller (./install.sh -u) and install again.

Also, you're going to have an issue with your hosts file. Please insure that your hosts file is set up correctly. For more information on that, please review the quick start guide.

question on hostname & DNS.

From the document .. i see that i should have my hostname along the lines of mail.zimbrachap.com (example) for internal use and resolving ?

I am not too good with the dns thingy..

Basically, the server must be able to resolve it self. if you're behind a NAT or firewall, then you're going to want split DNS.

However, during installation, as long as your hosts file is correct, you'll be fine.

The hosts file should contain your internal address.

thanks for all the help jholder..

i made alot of progress.. now i am stuck at this last part..

"DNS ERROR resolving MX for zimbra.chapmans.co.tt
It is suggested that the domain name have an MX record configured in DNS
"
now i am going to be using be using a relay for sending mail.. and also i will be using zimbra to download email from our offical domain chapmans.co.tt (external) server.

i know by now my questions must be really getitng silly

No worries.

Do you plan on having any mail delivered at all to this server?
If no, then you can ignore it. if yes, you need to create an mx record.

well i was looking at having this server download the pop3 email.. and have the clients on my network connect via imap to browse email and send email..

so thats a yes to your question.
