Default failed to install license

Ok, so we are going to purchase Zimbra any day now, but first I need to get a trial version installed so senior management can play with it and say "ok, that looks cool, go buy it".

I'm installing the network edition trial on CentOS 5. I've followed the directions in another post on this forum specific to CentOS 5 here: Centos 5 Install Guide

I've also made sure that an mx record has been created for this server. When I run: dig mail.example.com mx

I get:

mail.example.com
mail2.example.com

returned. So I know from this servers perspective, it is set up in DNS to act as the default MX server. But for some reason the installation wizard says that it was unable to find an mx record for mail.example.com...would you like to continue?

so I choose yes...

Every time during the installation, I get the following error:
Looking for valid license to install...failed to install license.

*******ERROR

Failed to install a license - this will prevent your server from functioning properly
Please contact Zimbra to obtain a license

Now, registered for a trial license twice now, and both ZCSLicense.xml files given during installation result in this error. I've made sure that our firewall is letting this box "call home" to the zimbra servers during installation. I don't see any traffic being blocked.

After installation, Tomcat fails to start properly and listen on port 80:443 even though I see httpd listening on 7780.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? Here is the contents of my setup log:

update: fixed the dns issue. i guess it was looking at mail.example.net as the domain instead of the host...so I just told it to search example.net and that worked.

still having all the other issues though with the license

First make sure it's in /opt/zimbra/conf (though I'm sure the directions you got with the trial told you this).
cp ZCSLicense.xml /opt/zimbra/conf

but what they might not say (I haven't requested a trial in a long time) is about the ownership/permissions:

chown zimbra:zimbra /opt/zimbra/conf/ZCSLicense.xml
chmod 444 /opt/zimbra/conf/ZCSLicense.xml

ok, that fixed the license problem. The documentation doesn't say to specifically place the license file in /opt/zimbra/conf (which doesn't exist yet when starting a new installation).

It just says to point to wherever you have the file when it asks you. However, manually creating /opt/zimbra/conf and placing the license file in there, then starting the install.sh script does take care of all the license errors.

I still can't get it fully started though.

After installation, tomcat/http fail to load the admin console correctly. Running zmcontrol status shows:

Host mail1a.den.****.net
antispam Running
antivirus Running
ldap Running
logger Running
mailbox Stopped
mysql.server is not running
mta Stopped
postfix is not running
snmp Running
spell Running

running zmcontrol start outputs LOTS of messages to the console.

the last bit of which reads:

Error: assertion '-r /opt/zimbra/conf/my.cnf' failed
Error: tomcat already running

Starting antispam...Done.
Starting antivirus...Done.
Starting snmp...FAILED

Starting spell...Done.
Starting mta...Done.

The rest just looks like informational debug output. there are no actual errors there or in the /opt/zimbra/log/startup.log file.

In /var/log/messages i found these:

the filesystem /dev/mapper/mail1avg0-zimbralv is mounted rw. that is where my /opt/zimbra is, and it didn't have any problems installing the initial installation files.

again, selinux is turned off. anyone know if there are any known issues with java and LVM volumes?

this error is also interesting:
Error: assertion '-r /opt/zimbra/conf/my.cnf' failed

there is no /opt/zimbra/conf/my.cnf. should one have been created during install? I DO see a /opt/zimbra/conf/my.logger.cnf. Tried copying that to my.cnf but still get the same error.

Could you post your zmsetup.log.####
do some stop/starts
zmcontrol stop
zmcontrol start
and post the relevant sections of these: (put them in a txt file it's not a huge post)
/var/log/zimbra.log
/opt/zimbra/log/mailbox.log
/opt/zimbra/tomcat/logs/catalina.out

other log files of note:
/docs/ne/latest/administration_guide/9_Monitoring.12.1.html#1075561

Smile requested files

couldn't find mailbox.log:
find /opt/zimbra -name mailbox.log
no such file

I zipped up the rest of the other logs and attached them.

Thanks so much for taking a look.

well I see:
Sep 7 13:44:00 mail1a zimbramon[17331]: 17331:info: Starting mailbox
so it attempted to start once...
-double check inside /opt/zimbra/log/

and so I know what's fresh (the log starts out already running & i see multiple 'starting services') could you
zmcontrol stop
move the logfiles to another name or purge them
zmcontrol stop
post logs again

You have something already on port 25?

Did you do a fresh install after changing hostnames? (follow the UnInstall Zimbra - ZimbraWiki directions first)

What's your /etc/hosts look like?

I'm really supprised you don't have a /opt/zimbra/log/mailbox.log though...

"not owned by root: /opt/zimbra/postfix-2.2.9/conf/main.cf"
as root run the fix permissions script:
cd /opt/zimbra/libexec/
./zmfixperms
