Default Need advice - Debian 3.1 in a vserver

I'm about to give up and buy a new dedicated box for this install but I do not know if running in a vserver is really my problem.

Short version:
Install was successful, but services did not start when complete.
Using zmcontrol start only starts ldap.
I've tried several times, including applying the suggested changes per the wiki article on installation into a vserver.
uname -a
2.6.12.6-vs2.0 #1 SMP Fri Sep 16 18:44:06 MDT 2005 i686 GNU/Linux

The main question is whether or not vserver is the problem. Should I just dedicate some hardware, or am I missing something unrelated to virtualization?

Don't do it.
There can be some complications with virtual servers, but Choosing Debian as your OS is a whole other can of worms.

Some of us (including myself) are fans of Debian.
But, it's been naughty and have some permissions issues.

So, we will not ship a Network Edition of Debian until they fix it.

Hi,

from my experiences it is vserver. I experienced esp. problems with java, not only with zimbra (runs in vserver with modificatons) but also with scalix (does not run at all on vserver) and domino!

If for some reasons you want zibra virtuall run it in a vmware server environment!

But best use a dedicated system!

If you have familiarity with Debian, you might want to try Dapper Drake (Ubuntu). It's one of the supported OS.

Hope this helps.

I use CentOS5 on a vserver without problems. But it worked also with SuSE 9.3 and I had also a try with Debian 3.1.

But from my overall experience i would suggest go for CentOS.
