| | | Zimbra on MacOSX Client and DNS Hello everybody,
I'm new here and I just want to start with a question
I'm very impressed from Zimbra possibilities and want to install it on a MacOS X client (not server) this week.
Does one have it successful running on it?
The other point is that I'm not sure if I really have to run DNS on this machine or not, and if I really have to get a A record.
The reason is, the documentation regarding the "single server installation" of Zimbra states that if you DO use the relay server of your ISP you don't have to enable DNS, so no A record is needed.
Is that correct?
I have a static IP and requested an MX record so it should be so far ok.
Can one help me please with this issue before I begin to install something?

| | Without an A record, how will the relay know where to relay it to? |

DNS is pretty much a must |

well, i'm not a dns specialist, but as i underastand the things (also my isp states that) an mx record must be enough if you don't won't to run dns.
the zimbra installation document also says the same - you can use your isp's relay server.
hmm, what should i do now? i have since today the mx record i have to install a server...

| | | well, tried to install zimbra (zmsetup.pl)...
first i get this one:
--- mail:/opt/zimbra/libexec root# ./zmsetup.pl
Operations logged to /tmp/zmsetup.log.361
Checking java version...1.5 found
Setting defaults...No results returned for A lookup of mail.local
Checked nameservers:
217.237.151.115
217.237.148.102
DNS ERROR resolving mail.local
---
going further...
--- DNS ERROR resolving MX for mail
It is suggested that the domain name have an MX record configured in DNS
---
but if i check this:
--- mail:~ admin$ host -t mx key-net.de
key-net.de mail is handled by 10 mail.key-net.de.
---
and:
--- mail:~ admin$ host -t a mail.key-net.de
mail.key-net.de has address 217.7.247.83
---
so, it seems ok so far.
but zcs tells me there's no a and mx record.
what could be wrong?
thx,

Your ISP is incorrect. DNS is a requirement of Zimbra (unless you have a dev box).
Please familiarize yourself with the Zimbra documentation to help you with your DNS issues. http://www.zimbra.com/docs/os/latest...erver_install/

| | | hi john,
thx. yes, i've already read the documentation.
but, what about the messages which i've posted checkin with host -t and host -t a, they seems to be correct, about a recod and mx record???
and, i have to say that 217.7.247.83 is my public ip-address (have only one), ths mail server is in a dmz behind a router with an ip of 192.168.100.2 (two router config, because of just having one public ip-adress).
if i do dig key-net.de mx i get: <<>> DiG 9.3.4 <<>> key-net.de mx

it seems to have a a record.
and what about that? You must configure a relay host if you do not enable DNS. After ZCS is installed, go to the Global Settings>MTA tab on the administration console and uncheck Enable DNS lookups. Enter the relay MTA address to use for external delivery.
so, what i should i do now?
should i try this split-dns thing?
thx,
key

| | If you are behind a router and/or firewall the you will need a Split DNS set-up, check the wiki for details.

| | | well phoenix, that split-dns is for red hat...
i'm on macosx and the /etc/named.conf is different...
and does that mean that i have to run a dns server on that machine???
