Well, they're not correct are they? According to the info you posted above and have in the hosts file your Zimbra server is located at 10.10.10.18 check it with
    Code:
host `hostname` <-- backticks not single quotes
    Also, according the this information:

    Code:
    Aug 12 07:16:44 mail-01 zmtomcatmgr[14624]: manager process 4498 died, shutdown completed
Aug 12 07:20:02 mail-01 postfix/postqueue[3931]: fatal: Queue report unavailable - mail system is down
you aren't using the FQDN of your zimbra server, you're using mail.xxxxxx in the DNS instead of mail-01.xxxxxxx - I'm confused as to why you're using different names.
    Regards

    Here's this:

    zimbra@mail-01:~/postfix/conf$ host `hostname`
    mail-01.emerson-school.org has address 10.10.10.18

    << Well, they're not correct are they?>>
    What's not correct?

<< you aren't using the FQDN of your zimbra server, you're using mail.xxxxxx in the DNS instead of mail-01.xxxxxxx - I'm confused as to why you're using different names. >>

I'm getting confused as to what I need to be doing here. I'm trying to get the $myhostname variable in postfix set to a FQDN. It just has mail-01.

You've said my zimbra_server_name is incorrect as it should be a FQDN, like mail-01.mydomain.com. So right now, I'm not sure what is incorrect in my DNS or how the zimbra_server_name variable is set by Zimbra.

In my internal DNS, I have A records that point to mail, mail-01 and webmail that go to 10.10.10.18. I have a MX record for mail that also points to 10.10.10.18.

    Thx.

As you'd just posted your DNS records I thought it would be obvious that I was talking about them.

Show me in this post of yours where your DNS has an A or MX record that points to your Zimbra mailserver on 10.10.10.18. Perhaps I'm being a bit dumb today but your DNS records are not correct and I don't understand why you think they are or how you think that what you've posted would work .

We seem to be going round in circles. You need an A & MX record that indicates to the Zimbra server that your IP address is 10.10.10.18 (as you've indicated that's what you have in the hosts file) and it point to a server that's called mail-01.emerson-school.org - according to the information you keep posting that informations doesn't exist.
    Regards

MS DNS servers if that makes a difference with "dig". I did the same with nslookup on a Win machine with the same results.

I'm not a "dig" person so dig with "any" just shows the general stuff. If I dig for mail.emerson-school.org I get:

    mailman@mail-01:~$ dig mail.emerson-school.org

This is getting silly. Do you, by any chance, have another mail server on this network?

The commands you use are the ones I gave you earlier i.e.

    Code:
    dig emerson-school.org mx
    dig emerson-school.org any
It is the domain name you search for not a subdomain. If they don't return the correct information then your DNS is incorrect and Zimbra will be unable to process email.
    Regards

No other mail server, Zimbra replaced our postfix box. The old box is powered off.

I reran your dig commands. Again, I'm not a dig guy so I don't know what you're supposed to get with the "any" switch.

<< If they don't return the correct information then your DNS is incorrect >>

If it is incorrect then let me know how it's incorrect. The other dig commands resolve for the A and MX records, all my clients are resolving fine to the server as well (using the A record for webmail).

Zimbra is processing the mail just fine, except for my problem in my original post. I get around it by doing the postconf -e, but, it doesn't stick and if I have to reboot then I have to run the command again. Not the best way to do things.

Agreed, this is getting silly. Thx for all your help so far.

I pointed this out earlier, you do not have a MX record for your server mail-01.emerson-school.org - what you have is mail.emerson-school.org and that won't resolve to your server. You've also got the FQDN of the server in your A record when it should be the domain name. Check the layout of this post and this wiki article. Both of those show you the correct (but slightly differently) layout for your DNS records. Change your records to match one of those layouts.
    Regards

An actually useful response, that does not just tell me to go read some unrelated doc! thanks jholder for just answering the question being asked with a concise answer.

Yes, a useful response but that wasn't the cause of his problem. Is there some particular reason you're posting to old (and very old) threads or is this some new autumn sport?

    Default No,

Just incredibly frustrated with this product at the moment.
Not your fault, fault of who broke it.
I just have to fix it.
